Stories of Us - May 6, 2019

Partnership Educators,

You can image my shock and confusion when my friend pointed out to me that we were actually heading south.  Being a sophomore in high school and finally having the freedom to drive in your own car was a wonderful thing.   I wasn't actually driving but I was arguing with him that we were heading in the wrong direction.  We said we had to head south and so I couldn't understand why he turned the way he did.

The story really began back in fourth grade.  As many of you know I attended Cypress School and my fourth-grade classroom was in the same location as the current fourth-grade classroom today.  The chalkboards, yes I went to school in the stone age, were placed on the walls on the south side of the room.  Above the chalkboards were the maps.  When Mrs. Dawson pulled down the maps for us to learn direction, I would mentally lay the map down and the north on the map was actually facing south physically.    That is how I learned direction and so I just always thought that was true.   It wasn't until high school that one of my friends corrected me while we were driving in a car.

Mrs. Dawson and I still email each other from time to time and she thought that the story was so funny.  Actually, it teaches us that our kids do listen, learn, and apply the information that we are trying to teach them.  They apply it within the context that they have at that moment.  Thanks for your continued work on helping our students learn content from multiple perspectives and multiple avenues.  This is the power of what our teachers do each day.  Teachers never give up on kids and always continue to look for ways to teach all of our kids to learn.  Thank you Redding teachers and enjoy your week this week.

This week the principals will be communicating with parents that we will not be having school on June 7th or the 11th to make up the snow days.  The last day of school will be June 6th as a minimum day.
