Student Ownership of Learning

Definition Introduction:

One way to improve student achievement is through supporting student ownership of learning, a core component of formative instructional practices. Teaching students to take an active role in their learning can benefit students by promoting student goal setting, self-assessment, and self-determination. As students become meaningfully engaged in their learning, they gain a better understanding of learning targets, how to collect and document evidence of their learning, and how to evaluate and clarify additional learning needs, leading to the ultimate goal of improving student achievement.

Components of Grit
  • Interest – Passion begins with intrinsically enjoying what you are doing.
  • Capacity to Practice – One form of perseverance is the daily discipline of trying to do things better than we did yesterday.
  • Purpose – What ripens passion is the conviction that your work matters.
  • Hope – Hope is a rising-to-the-occasion kind of perseverance. Hope is present in all three other stages.
