Stories of Us - August 28, 2020

Partnership Educators,
As I stood staring at the patio cover, I heard a low honk from a vehicle.  My expression went from curious to questioning as I lowered my gaze to stare at the driver in a red Honda looking back at me.  It was then that I realized that I was standing in the middle of the street.
The story started when my wife decided that she wanted a patio cover built on the back of our house.  I truly became a connoisseur of everything patio cover.  I read books, looked online, and started stopping at other people's houses and starting over their fences.    This brings us to me standing in the middle of the street admiring a well-built patio cover.
Purpose says a lot about why we may want to learn something or do something.  We value it or see a greater end to the content.  Sometimes it is because we have made connections between the content we're learning and to ourselves or other knowledge we know.  Other times it is about connections with people we care about. It is relevant to us in some way.

Autonomy gives us the sense that we can do it and that there might be multiple ways to get to the learning or task.  It gives us hope that it's doable.  While we are trying and failing somehow we get value from our efforts to accomplish the task.  Risk-taking is a big part of being autonomous and we see failure as an opportunity to learn.

Supportive experts help to guide us when we get stuck, lost, or frustrated.  We all seek people who know more than us.  I read books and talk with people about my interests or just go and stare at someone else's model of what they did.  The expert doesn't give us all the information we need, they just help us fill in the blanks.

In time as ever-changing as these, we all need experts to help us fill in the blanks and give us hope.  For the portrait award this week I would like to highlight two such individuals who are helping us all "fill in the blanks" as we take risks and work to accomplish high levels of students learning.
Responsibility is when someone acts honestly and demonstrates the care of a larger community.  They honor their commitments and own their actions and in turn, earn trust and respect from others.  Congratulations to Brian Selke and Shannon Bosetti for winning the Responsibility award for the start of this year.  Their responsible and never tiring 1:1 work with teachers, video PD training, teaching substitutes, building online content, and attending collaborations are nothing short of miraculous. Of course, these are just some of the actions that they are involved in.  They could have easily become overwhelmed with the amount of work to be done but they have come up big for us all.  Thanks so much, you two, from your Redding family.
Thanks for a great first two weeks.  Enjoy your weekend.
