Stories of Us - September 11, 2020

Partnership Educators,
Today represents a moment in time when everyone can remember where they were on this date nineteen years ago.  We are reminded of the memories of those who lost their lives in New York, Washington, and Pennsylvania.  Etched in our minds are the pictures of the heroic efforts of the rescue workers who rushed forward to saves the lives of the individuals caught in the tragedy of this act of terror.   Our brave public servant comrades in our police and fire have always been there for us as citizens.  Honoring those individuals who have served or continue to serve in these organizations as well as our military shouldn't have an end.  They run to our rescue in some of our lowest moments and I know many of them are our loved ones from the Redding, Shasta, and Igo community of employees.  Let's all give thanks for those we know and don't know who serve and pray for the current fire disasters and those that are affected.

As we reflect on times in our past like what is described above, we also need to recognize our role in the efforts to help our children through the times that they are living in so they to can reflect back on them in their past.    The portrait award this week honoring perseverance.  This is a trait we often tell our students to aspire to when they get stuck, get frustrated
Perseverance is a drive for achieving success despite difficulties.  Embracing the idea of failure as a part of the success process and taking risks to be able to move forward which often involves stepping into uncertain realms.    Perseverance is explicitly tied to the idea of Grit.  We often tell our students that there are no shortcuts to success.  What we sometimes forget is how often we fail along the way.  The Character LAB outlines some great ideas on how to encourage this trait. https://characterlab.org/playbooks/grit/  At the beginning of this school year, we handed out pins that represented this trait.  I have my pin on my lanyard proudly displayed with the others from previous years.

Congratulations to Don Dooley for winning the Perseverance award for the start of this year.  It has been quite a challenge for our Hybrid teachers to say the least.  Don has taken this challenge by the horns and is constantly thinking of ways to make this a better experience for all (especially his students).  He has been meeting with all of his students (live and virtually) for every period from day one.  He has been successful because of his perseverance and critical thinking skills.  His students know what to expect and show up ready to learn whether they are in the classroom or zooming in.  Thanks, Don.
Have a great and powerful weekend.
